Gym & Tonic By John Godber Directed by Terri Wood Produced at Stourbridge Town Hall 17th - 20th March 2004 Pictures from the production in Stourbridge Town Hall to follow Review: Stourbridge News: March 25th, 2004 Latest show proves a real tonic Stourbridge Theatre Company's version of John Godber comedy Gym and Tonic didn't quite have the audience in fits of laughter as promised - but was a fine show nevertheless. The bittersweet drama between disillusioned middle-aged couple Don and Shirley Weston, portrayed splendidly by Gary Durrant and Helen Gould, was superb. The talented pair (last seen together in STC's Educating Rita) proved an accomplished double act as the couple who visit a health farm to try and re-ignite their crumbling relationship. Diverse Durrant shifted effortlessly from half-soaked, unfit husband to enraged and betrayed lover. Gould's sex-starved Shirley was equally passionate and believable and her northern accent added to the character's credibility and warmth. Sandra Griswold was a hoot as larger-than-life, outspoken millionairess Gertrude Tate and Alex Long was also entertaining as egotist Ken Blake. Staging was suggestive, but effective - and made for smooth scene changes. Directed by Terri Wood, it was yet another engaging outing for the society, which has certainly upped its game in the last year. Bev Holder
